Albania has a strategic position in the Mediterranean, at the crossroads between Western countries and the Balkans. The development of its ports and Maritime industry can further boost its economy as well as exchanges and economic development in the whole Mediterranean area, especially on the Adriatic side.
This study has analysed the significant role that this sector can play from a geo-strategic perspective to make Albania stand out in the international landscape. Situated on the front side of the Adriatic, the country is investing and focusing on its infrastructure to enhance its international presence and value at a difficult time for the global economy.
The maritime industry represents a key asset to boost the country's economic performance over the next decade. This sector is undergoing a period of renewal in Albania, as significant investments are being made in the development of the necessary infrastructure and the improvement of both tourism and maritime capacity and potential. The case of Durres port is a clear example of this strategy.
